'On tiptoe I crept up to the door of the punishment chamber and with immense excitement listened to events being played out inside.' Famously sentenced to imprisonment for six years with hard labour for 'committing serious moral offences against children' in 1924, this first volume of Edith Cadivec's biography tells of her early childhood years in Austria and how after the death of her mother, the birch rod was introduced into her life by her new stepmother.
